Richard Garraputa, Corning Data’s JD Edwards evangelist, recently presented a primer on License Plate Management at Collaborate17. This article is the final installment of his four-part blog series revealing the highlights of that presentation.
In Part 1, I defined what license plating is and what it isn’t.
In Part 2, I discussed some common license plating mistakes in usage and lack of usage.
In Part 3, I told the success story of license plating done right.
Today, I’ll give you some useful advice for implementing license plating to streamline your company’s warehouse management systems.
Tips and tricks for License Plate Management
As with any functional implementation, make sure to document your requirements before you begin. It’s helpful to classify and prioritize each requirement based on importance. For example: ‘’Required,” “Desired,” “Beneficial” are helpful classifications.
- Make sure you understand the differences
between license plating and some of the other functionality of EnterpriseOne. Learn from others’ mistakes!
- Remember, you don’t have to make the jump into a full blown Warehouse Management implementation. Start small with the inventory transactions you already use. Just make sure you are licensed for the Warehouse Management module.
- If you are converting from the Storage Unit Number used in EnterpriseOne 8.11, make sure you understand the native data conversion routine that will transform your F4602 table data. Run a test in Prototype first!
- You can disable using mixed item (heterogeneous) license plates. This may be helpful if you are using License Plating primarily for inventory management transactions or Work Order completions.
- If you enable automatic creation of license plates during transaction processing, you can turn it back off at the transaction level for adjustments, receipts, completions and transfers
- Seriously consider using RF data collection, such as DSI. It’s hard to get the real benefits promised by license plating, such as simplified transaction processing and real time visibility without a data collection solution. Plus, if you find any gaps in the native license plating functionality, filling those gaps is a lot easier with DSI than it is with a modification to standard JD Edwards code. The limited functionality to support license plating in World makes data collection essential. Corning Data can implement your DSI services quickly and efficiently.
